“UNA OTRA COSA” (2022) by the Mexican artist Calixto Ramírez is presented at Spazio Rivoluzione. The exhibition, the result of a performative action conceived exclusively for Spazio Revolution, is dedicated to the tormented and splendid Palermo, a city overflowing with contradictions, in which the glories of the past annoyingly coexist with a tearing and almost immortal state of abandonment. Palermo is an indescribable tragedy, superbly beautiful and corrupt to the core, hopelessly clinging to the magnetic charm of its decadence.Between wonders and decay, Calixto Ramírez has collected a series of objects in the alleys and streets of the city, activating them through a propitiatory ritual that foresees their destruction in the hope of a new beginning. These worn, transformed, shattered objects symbolize the break with an intrusive, cumbersome past, which charges the present with fears and uncertainties, slowing down its progress and stifling its enthusiasm. In material culture, in fact, an object carries with it a powerful expressive charge linked to its interaction with space and people. A cracked, chipped object, no longer useful, preserves the signs of the action of man and time, of a history that pours into the present. What has passed, however, must not be completely denied, but reassembled in a new form as the basis for a different restart. Therefore, not a burden from which it is difficult to shake, but a solid bridge for a new and Hegelian becoming. The need for a change leads us to a liberating and profoundly thaumaturgical act. It invites us to break, to change the point of view on what we are and what we observe, to transform one thing into another. Building a better version of the present takes us away from the transgressions and barbarities of the past, from a story that wants to continue to be, but which is right to explode to make room for new nourishment and energy.
